How do I obtain my NIE number for Spain?

19th January 2023

What is an NIE number? What can you do with it? And, what should you do with it?

The NIE number is the Spanish tax identification number for foreigners (numero de identidad de extranjeros). You need it for just about everything as soon as you want something more than just a few weeks on holiday and a nice meal on the Costa.

For example, when you buy a house or a car.

You can request the NIE number yourself. Either at the consulate in your home country or in Spain at the foreigners police. The process is surprisingly simple and also a good test of your patience as for many people getting the NIE is their first experience with the Spanish bureaucratic paper mill.

What do I need an NIE number for?

As soon as you buy a house, want to put a car in your name, have to pay taxes, want to study at the university or, for example, want to register in the municipality, you will be asked for your NIE. But also, for example, if you want to take out a telephone subscription, connect utilities in your name or want to insure your newly purchased house or car.

How can I apply for a NIE number?

In principle, applying for your NIE number is not a complicated procedure.

There are 3 options for applying for the NIE.

1. You apply for the NIE yourself in Spain at the Foreigners´ Police

2. You apply for the NIE yourself at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence.

3. You have the NIE applied for in Spain by nardia real estate agency with a notarial power of attorney.

Apply for a NIE number yourself. What do I need?

You will need 3 copies of the completed Form EX-15, 1 copy of the completed Form 790, a copy of your passport and 2 recent passport photos. Not too bad?

With the completed form 790 you must go to one of the banks where payments to the Spanish government can be made (not all banks deal with those payments). There you have to pay 9.85 euros in cash at the counter to get a stamp on your form 790.

At some banks, the counter for this type of operations is only open on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. So check before you go whether you can go to pay.

Form 790 can be completed and printed here.

Once you have collected all the forms, you will need an appointment with the foreigner office of the national police. That is the ‘Oficina de Extranjeria’ of the Policia Nacional with offices in various major cities (including Alicante, Torrevieja, Elche, Alcoi, Benidorm, Denia, Valencia).

You can make an appointment online via the website ‘internet cita previa’ of the ´Administración Electrónica Gobierno de España´. This is the website for making appointments with the administration and government.

Once on the website you first choose the province where you want to request the NIE number, the city of the office you would like to go to, what kind of document you need, the NIE, and then fill in your personal data.

Once you have filled in the fields, you will be given a choice of 3 possible appointments. Sometimes that is within a few weeks on consecutive days and at different times, sometimes the first appointment is only available after a few months and sometimes you get the message ‘Lo sentimos. No hay citas available’. The latter means that there are no appointments available.

You can reload and complete the appointments page again. If you choose another city, appointments are sometimes available.

Try it a few times at different times of the day for 3 or 4 different cities.

You can also ask a question to the government via this website.

After all, we´re free to ask.   Go to website and ask a question!

Apply for your NIE number at the consulate:

You will need the same forms described above. However, your form 790 does not have to be stamped by a Spanish bank for the consulate. You can pay 9.85 euros in cash or with a debit card.

An appointment is also required to apply at the consulate.

The contact details of the Spanish embassy in your home country, you can find on the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Register with the tax authorities

If you need the NIE to pay taxes, for example because you are going to buy a house or car in Spain, it must be registered and activated at the Agencia Tributaria (the tax office).

When you buy a property, the registration of your NIE with the tax authorities will automatically be done by the notary public.

Suppose you have received your NIE and, for example, you already buy a car before you have bought a house, then the NIE must be registered with the tax authorities.

This can be done fairly easily. You must then fill in form 030, make an appointment with the tax authorities and drop by with the completed form, your passport and the NIE number that you received from the policía de extranjería.

If you have the NIE application made by our office and the registration with the tax authorities is not done by the notary public, we will of course take care of this for you.

Have your NIE number requested for you by nardia real estate agency:

Convenience first.  If you don´t have time or just do not feel like getting into the Spanish bureaucratic system, you can also have your NIE number requested for you by our office.

This service comes at a cost but it is obviously the most convenient.

Once you have found the home of your choice, the reservation agreement must be signed. This can easily be combined with signing a notarial power of attorney at the notary in Spain. The power of attorney is of course only for applying for the NIE number and communication with the tax authorities.

To apply for the NIE number for you, we need the notarial power of attorney, a legalized copy of your passport and 2 recent passport size photos. With this we will fill in the various forms on your behalf and will also apply for the NIE number + register it with the tax authorities.
